Purpose of the post
To provide leadership in research, learning and teaching, knowledge transfer and professional practice, to the benefit of students, the School, the University and the wider community. The post holder will be expected to undertake duties in teaching, research, leadership of research, management and citizenship activities associated with student experience, development of staff members and activities leading to the enhancement of the profile of the Division and the School. The holder of the position will have responsibilities aligned with the School’s and Division’s priorities, and contribute to relevant roles at the University level.
Main activities and responsibilities
Core Activities – Learning and Teaching:
- To teach in the fields of Chemical Engineering and related areas, and support student learning via a Virtual Learning Environment, at the university and its collaborative partners, both in the UK and abroad, including:
- liaising and working with module co-ordinators and other staff, either teaching the assigned modules or responsible for courses participating in the modules
- preparing and marking coursework assessments in these subjects, where required, and providing timely and useful feedback to students
- supervising, where appropriate, the practice based learning, research projects, dissertations, and PhD students
- preparing, invigilating and marking examinations in these subjects, where required
- undertaking administrative duties linked to the above tasks, including monitoring attendance, maintaining assessment records, and carrying out module evaluations, in accordance with the prevailing regulations
- To act as a personal tutor to students, including, where appropriate, the supervision of placements, field trips, residential courses and summer schools
- To attend meetings, as required, including course boards and examination boards and other divisional, school, university, and professional body meetings
- To participate in the processes for the recruitment, clearing, selection, enrolment and induction of students, including attendance at Open Days, Clearing and visits to schools and undertaking other marketing initiatives, and to contribute towards student employability through employer engagement
- To adhere to current policies, regulations and values of the University, and to contribute towards University/School/Division’s vision and targets
- To take on such other duties and responsibilities as delegated by the Dean of School, Head of Division, or other relevant managers.

- Remain abreast of the developments in the particular academic discipline.
- Actively support School/University activities that promote or develop research, knowledge transfer and professional practice.
Core Activities – Administration, Management, Leadership and Citizenship:
Support for the core business of the School, including participation in the processes for the recruitment, selection, enrolment, and induction of students, attendance at University recruitment events and marketing initiatives.
- Undertaking administrative duties required for the smooth running of the School, including monitoring attendance, maintaining assessment records and carrying out module evaluations, in accordance with the prevailing regulations.
- Attendance and participation in meetings related to the delivery and development of the subject area and development, including Course Boards, Examination Boards and other Divisional, School and University meetings.
- Involvement in external engagement as appropriate (with the profession, the local community, schools and colleges, employers and international partners).
- Trained to contribute to areas such as ethical approvals and staff appointments.
- Leadership through specific roles and/or general attitude, actions and commitment across all areas of activity including equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Higher Level Activity Examples
Achievements in some of the following areas, at a level consistent with national impact in the appointee’s discipline:
- Produce papers for publication in educational journals and other academic media; and contribute to conferences through lectures, paper or poster presentations.
- Receive educational recognition (e.g. winning grants for education, nomination for awards or external acknowledgement).
- Prepare for publication papers in journals, books, chapters in books that are nationally recognised; and present papers at conferences and symposia.
- Be successful in winning external research grants and applied research funding as principal or co-investigator.
- Have a track record in winning educational funding (e.g. such as for partnerships and collaborations).
- Contribute to coordination and/or delivery of Continual Professional Development (CPD).
- Develop innovations and inventions, win patents and set out companies.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Qualifications:
10 years relevant professional post-graduate experience or a PhD in an appropriate or closely related discipline.
Teaching Experience:
Evidence of ability to meet the teaching needs of the School at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake PhD supervision in the subject area.
Pedagogy:
Evidence of a reflective and thoughtful approach to pedagogy with emphasis on: effective communication; the use of stimulating and effective learning and teaching strategies; and the development of effective blended learning strategy.
Academic Management and Planning:
Ability to contribute to Academic Management and Planning at Division and School levels.
Ability to take up a leadership role within the Division and demonstrate a record of management skills including the ability to motivate staff. Able to demonstrate an ability to successfully undertake the management of projects.
Supporting Students:
Ability to work as a team member to enhance the quality of taught provision, improve levels of student satisfaction, student retention, progression and employability, and support student enterprise activities.
Research and Scholarship, Enterprise, and Professional Engagement:
Evidence of significant achievement or potential to make a substantial contribution to the work of the Division and School in respect of at least one of the following areas:
Research and Scholarship
Evidence of ability to contribute to the scholarly profile of the Division and where appropriate, to enhance the School’s REF submission profile.
Enterprise
Potential to contribute to the income generating activities of the Division through, inter alia, consultancy, Continuing Professional Development delivery, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, and contributing expertise to support Enterprise Centre projects.
Professional Engagement
Ability to link professional experience in industry to pedagogic practice to enhance the student experience and promote student employability. Ability to contribute to curriculum, module and course development to enhance the Division’s portfolio of courses.
Communication and IT skills:
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills including: oral; written/literacy; numeracy and presentation; underpinned by the ability to use IT to support students and discharge administrative responsibilities.
Evidence of experience in the use of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in teaching (e.g. Blackboard/Moodle).
