The University Finance Office is seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced finance professional to the position of Head of Finance (Assurance). This role will work with colleagues across the University to improve the agility and effectiveness of our financial controls.
You will head up a dynamic team that plays a pivotal role in ensuring that financial processes are fit for purpose, and that colleagues are supported to understand and embed financial compliance in their areas of operation.
There’s a big people dimension to this role, so to succeed you will need to be an effective communicator. You’ll be good at networking and building relationships and enjoy helping people to get things done in the right way. Whilst being flexible and pragmatic, you will also need to be comfortable to ‘hold the line’ where it matters.
As well as having an accountancy qualification and current professional body membership, you need to demonstrate that you maintain your professional knowledge. Your post qualification experience needs to include assessing and implementing financial controls. You will need strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be comfortable using spreadsheets to work with and analyse financial data. Project management skills and training in process review methodologies would be an advantage but these aren’t essential, and we will support you to develop your skills, as required.
This is a fast-paced role, so you’ll need to be an organised and effective manager. There’s lots of scope to develop financial assurance at the University so there’s a real opportunity to shape the future of the function.
Finance staff across the University are networked as a professional community of expertise. You will be supported to continue your professional journey through access to Continuing Professional Development training opportunities, sector networks and regular Finance Office briefings. The University offers a wide range of learning and development opportunities, and we will work with you to support your career development. You will also receive a wide range of benefits including access to university pension scheme, 30 days annual leave plus University closure days and bank holidays (43 days 22/23). Discounted sports memberships, reduced conference rates, 241 Arts centre events, Totum & Taste Cards savings and Costco membership cards.
A £5,000 per annum market supplement (pro-rated and non-pensionable) is available for the successful applicant on provision of proof of current membership of an approved accounting body and evidence they hold the appropriate accountancy qualifications.
Applications from candidates seeking to work a reduced FTE are welcomed and will be considered in conjunction with the operational requirements of the role
