We are seeking a Senior Lecturer in Policing to lead the development of our new undergraduate Professional Policing programme at Newman.
You will work within the Department of Social Science, Sport and Business which is home to a range of programmes including Criminology and Law. The Department is growing its portfolio of programmes (including Social Work for September 2022) and you will play a significant role in leading the development of our new undergraduate Professional Policing programme.
You should be able to deliver modules across the curriculum, including mandatory modules, and have a specialism in any area of Policing. Ideally, you will have experience of curriculum development and leading a programme to successful validation. You will work with colleagues from across the University to promote and grow the programme and to develop appropriate external partnerships. You will need to have relevant and recent operational policing experience within the UK.
You should be able to evidence an appropriate level of experience and a commitment to excellence in research, teaching and providing an excellent student experience. You should be educated to Masters level in a relevant discipline and seek to work towards a PhD if not already achieved.

Main responsibilities:
- To lead on the course development and delivery of the new undergraduate Professional Policing programme at Newman
- To act as the Course Leader for the new undergraduate Professional Policing programme at Newman
To ensure an excellent student learning experience through:
- Planning and delivery of undergraduate, potentially postgraduate courses in Policing and any other programmes that Newman University may develop to meet the needs of the Police Education and Qualifications Framework and any cognate subjects, in line with Newman University Learning Teaching and Assessment strategy, Academic Framework and quality requirements
- Delivery of specialisms in two or more areas of the curriculum
- Leading on and deliver lecturing/teaching/assessing at all levels and evaluating teaching and learning practice
- Leading on programme / module development and curriculum review to successful validation and subsequent revalidations
- Working cooperatively and collaboratively with other colleagues to support academic programme delivery and identity
- Producing teaching materials that motivate and inspire student learning
- Making appropriate use of technology to support learning and teaching, e.g. Newman’s Moodle VLE
- Supervising and providing student support and guidance for student learning activities such as work-based learning and placements
- Creating assignment briefs, marking/assessing assignments, examinations and assessment tasks, providing timely and constructive feedback to students, conducting all assessment activity in line with Newman quality processes.

- Providing academic support and guidance for students as an Academic Personal Tutor
- Participating in ongoing professional development and evaluation of practice relating to learning, teaching and assessment in line with qualifications and experience, changes in subject/discipline, pedagogic development and innovation in learning technology.
- Engaging in Newman staff development and the appraisal process
- Initiating and conducting internationally recognised research and scholarship which is eligible for inclusion in the Research Excellence Framework exercise or similar external research quality validation exercises in an area relevant to policing
- Disseminating research through appropriate channels including articles in journals of international standing and internationally recognised conferences
- Engaging in income generating activities in their subject area and to support their colleagues in this area of work
- Ensuring that individual research activities are integrated into to the student learning experience of Policing students where appropriate
- Leading on the development of Policing subject employability particularly supporting work-placements for students in police or allied settings, civic engagement and extra-curricular agendas
- Leading on developing outreach, knowledge exchange and recruitment activities in the subject area
- Building and developing relationships with external stakeholders and the professional bodies to enhance the Newman Policing student experience and the profile of the Newman Professional Policing programme.
- In accordance with the University’s Information Security Policy, the post holder will be dealing with ‘restricted information’ as part of their duties.
- As a manager the post holder has a responsibility to ensure that policies and procedures are followed and that staff receive appropriate induction, training and support, that absence is managed and recorded and that their direct reports receive an annual appraisal.
- The appointee will be allocated other academic duties in line with role and commensurate with the grade, as deemed necessary by the line manager.
